Sludge Treatment Facilities and Environmental Education Centre - Hong Kong

Concept design of the Sludge Treatment Facilities
The plant comprises four incinerators contained within two main plant halls, a 10-storey administration tower, an environmental education centre with recreational pools and community leisure facilities (including a habitat for water birds, viewing platform, etc.) for the public.
Technical Description Sludge delivery:
2000 T/d with a 30% average dryness. In normal operation, 4 boilers at 91% load (500 t/d of sludge each). In case of a boiler failure/maintenance, 3 boilers run at 100% (550 t/d each).
Boilers deliver HP steam at nominal conditions of 42 bar abs and 383°C, with a maximum flow of 31.5 t/h of steam at 100% MCR (maximum continuous rated). 12 MWe is required to cover the house load of the facility. 2 MWe is exported to the grid. Each STG is sized for 14 MWe (12 + 2), therefore 1 STG is enough to produce
the power required by the plant. In normal operation, 2 STG at 50 %.
In Hong Kong, Vasconi’s design team has developed a self-sufficient and sustainable design solution to dispose of up to 2,000 tonnes of sewage sludge per day in the largest facility of its type in the world. The heat generated is recovered for power generation, and power surplus to the plant’s requirements is exported to the regional electricity grid. At full operational capacity, an excess of 2MW of power is available daily.
The STF is highly sustainable. As well as the self-sufficient process almost 70% of the site is landscapes or has green roof coverage. The project is achieving BEAM Plus accreditation. The site has a zero fluid discharge policy, which means that water recovered through desalination is used on site for drinking and industrial processes; treated wastewater is used for vehicle wash and irrigation; rainwater is collected from green roofs and used to supply process water and fire service tanks; and all wastewater is treated on-site for reuse.
